I studied literary translation (from French and German) for two years at Cambridge, for Part I of the English literature tripos, then switched to art history and took almost two decades to find my way to full-time translating, research and writing.
Along the way, I worked as an editor and writer in book and magazine publishing in London and France, for employers and clients including Thames & Hudson Ltd, Philip Wilson and Scala (fine art), Condé Nast, IPC magazines, Cadogan Guides and Time Out Paris (luxury, lifestyle, travel and food writing). I also gained a solid grounding in ‘editorial marketing’, corporate and institutional communications – I edited several client magazines for Maxwell Consumer Publishing (back in the day) and spent ten years freelancing with INSEAD business school in Fontainebleau and Singapore, first as a writer and editor on a stable of academic and institutional publications, and finally as commissioning and managing editor for the launch issue of a major business review, INSEAD Quarterly (IQ).
All of which feeds my work today:
- My academic and professional background in fine art and art publishing led me to write a monograph on the livres d’artiste of Henri Matisse (Thames & Hudson / University of Chicago Press, 2020), and has a fuelled a long-standing collaboration with leading French art institutions and publishers including the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the Institut National de l’Histoire de l’Art, the Musée Rodin, the Musée Marmottan, Flammarion, Somogy and more.
- As an experienced copywriter, sub and communications writer, I regularly ‘transcreate’ marketing texts and copy for leading French luxury houses.
- My background in luxury, lifestyle and interiors journalism has led to a series of translations for Flammarion, including Inès de la Fressange’s best-selling Parisian Chic: A Style Guide, India Mahdavi’s Home Chic: Decorating with Style, and monographs on leading designers Christian Liaigre and Axel Vervoordt.
